DUWFC celebrate double success with Hamish and Sean
Yesterday saw scenes of celebration at GE Arena as DUWFC celebrated winning the SWFL2 East League in their first season, and what a first season it has been. Since being formed from scratch last summer the team have won both the SWFL2 (Scottish Women's Football League Division 2) Cup and now the SWFL2 East League title. During their first league campaign the team have won every competitive league game. Promotion means that DUWFC will be playing in the SWFL Division 1 next season and their ambition is to win this league to gain access to the Scottish Women's Premier League. The ladies were presented with the League trophy by Dundee United "Hall of Famers", Hamish McAlpine and Sean Dillon.
Gavin Muir, Chair of ArabTRUST said “We are proud to sponsor DUWFC and congratulate both the team and all of those that have worked so hard behind the scenes to make the first season such a success. ArabTRUST see supporting DUWFC as a key part of our community development objectives and we will be supporting the team again next season.”
Justine Mitchell, Chair of DUWFC, added "Women's football is the fastest growing sport in the world and it was the natural progression for the Club to have a Women's Team. lt was also important to me that the community have this women's team, which is why DUWFC has been formed as part of the Community Trust, United For All.
As part of DUWFC's desire to build and promote women's football in Dundee they are now setting up a Development Team with trials for this due to take place in November. The Development Team will play in the League DUWFC have just won, the SWFL2 East League. ln addition, DUWFC have been in discussions with other local clubs with a view to creating partnerships, again to develop and promote girls and women's football in the area.
DUWFC believe creating partnerships with local grassroots clubs in the area is the best way to support the grovrrth of the game. These partnerships will provide a structured development model for everyone involved which in turn will create a "win win" situation for clubs, coaches and most importantly the players, we flrmly believe that a football Club should be at the heart of the community and vice versa. We are at a very exciting time in women's football with the sport growing so fast. We have the National Team havlng qualified for the Women's Euros 2017 for the first time and Glasgow City and Hibernian Ladies playing in the Champions League. lt is a great time to be part of this."
Credit must of course go to the players who have performed fantastically well in their inaugural season, as well as the Coaches and the backroom staff, lt has been an amazing team effort in their first season. Head Coach, Gavin Beith said: "l'm delighted that in our first season we have secured the League and Cup double. All players, coaches and committee members have worked so hard to make this happen. The commitment shown from all has been outstanding. This season has given the Club a great foundation to build upon."
Justine Mitchell wanted to express gratitude to all involved, "l just want to thank everyone, the players, the Coaches and Lorna Moffat, our Club Secretary, who have all worked very hard to make this happen. lt has been a joy to get to know the girls and see them grow as players. A huge thanks also has to go to our Sponsors who helped to make this happen. DUWFC is self sufficient and this sponsorship assisted us to buy our kit. Thank you to Dr Noodles, ArabTRUST, DUDA and Paint-tec. Last but not least, a massive thank you to everyone who has backed the team this season. The whole of DUWFC appreciate your support."
