Derek was appointed to the Board of Dundee United in September 2003, with a principal remit to improve communications and dialogue with supporters.
A long term advocate of supporters’ rights and the value of supporters’ trusts, Derek had been involved with various Dundee United supporters’ groups prior to his appointment and also at national level in both Scotland and the UK. He took a leading part in securing the support of the Scottish Parliament for funding the establishment of Supporters Direct in Scotland and was appointed to the main Board of Supporters Direct in London.
Following his appointment as Director of Dundee United, Derek helped facilitate the formation of ArabTRUST, the Dundee United Supporters’ Trust, and has continued to promote the Trust, wherever appropriate, within the Tannadice main board and in club communication vehicles.
