Many members will be aware of the work that ArabTRUST and Dundee United have done to support the Show Racism the Red Card initiative over the years. Within Scotland, this initiative has been extended into a new strand – Show Bigotry the Red Card.
ArabTRUST were represented at a recent seminar 'Tackling Sectarianism Together' hosted at Hampden Park by Show Bigotry the Red Card (SBtRC). The seminar highlighted the nature of the problem and the fantastic work being done by a number of agencies to try to eradicate this blight from our society.
SBtRC are working from a great angle – Rivals not Enemies. This highlights that you can still passionately support for your football club without the discrimination and malice that sectarianism brings.
Most of the time sectarianism in Scotland is projected as isolated to Rangers and Celtic or being a Glasgow based problem. Unfortunately, it is not, though the depth of the problem is undoubtedly worse in certain areas. Shamefully, 27 of the 32 local authorities in Scotland have convictions for sectarianism in the last 10 years, during which over 2,000 people have been convicted.
SBtRC’s initial focus is on educating schoolchildren on the need for equality and respect. Further work is planned in association with other agencies to tackle the adult population, as a lot of the views provided by the children involved in the programme to date have been hugely influenced by their interactions with parents, family, etcetera.
At United we can be proud of our inclusiveness and tolerance. However, we cannot be complacent and must continue to ensure that bigotry and racism have no place within our current and future generations of supporters.
